What soaks up water in a basement? Water Damage

Water damage is a common problem in basements, especially during heavy rainfall or flooding. It can cause extensive damage to your home and belongings, and can even pose a health hazard. There are a number of ways to soak up water in a basement, including:

  • Wet/dry vacuum. This is the most effective way to remove water from a basement. A wet/dry vacuum can be rented from most hardware stores.
  • Mop and bucket. This is a less effective method than using a wet/dry vacuum, but it can still be used to remove small amounts of water.
  • Towels. Towels can be used to soak up small amounts of water. Be sure to wring out the towels frequently and replace them as they become saturated.
  • Kitty litter. Kitty litter is a great way to absorb water. Spread it around the basement and let it sit for several hours. The kitty litter will absorb the water and turn into a gel.
  • Newspapers. Newspapers can also be used to absorb water. Spread them around the basement and let them sit for several hours. The newspapers will absorb the water and become damp.

Once you have removed the water from your basement, it is important to clean and disinfect the area to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. You can do this by using a bleach solution or a commercial cleaner.
